When you notice a strange lump under your dog’s skin it is only natural to worry. One common cause of these lumps is a sebaceous cyst. These are benign (non-cancerous) growths that form when a hair follicle or oil gland becomes blocked. While these cysts are often harmless, they can occasionally rupture, become infected, or cause discomfort.
Sebaceous cysts can vary in size. You may notice they stay the same size for months or years, slowly enlarge over time, or suddenly rupture and ooze a foul-smelling, pasty discharge.
This is where a veterinary urgent care center can come in, and treat and/or remove the cysts for the overall wellbeing of your pet’s health. If not treated properly, the sebaceous cyst can become infected, rupture and not heal properly, or can become a serious bother to your pup.
When you visit a veterinary urgent care center, like one of our 8 hospitals in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, you get peace of mind and your pet gets same-day evaluation and procedure.
Our team will examine your dog properly and come up with a plan to drain or remove the cyst. A procedure can sometimes be done under sedation or local anesthetic. Your pup will go home with a cone to deter them from licking the area to limit the risk of infection.
Sebaceous cysts in dogs are usually nothing to panic about, but when they cause problems, fast and effective care makes all the difference. Our teams are here to help in 8 locations across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. VUCC’s teams are here 7 days a week and walk-ins are welcome daily.
