As an update to our December 3rd article on excessive levels of Vitamin D in certain dog foods, we recently learned that Hill’s Pet Nutrition has issued a voluntary recall of several types of canned dog food in cooperation with the FDA.
The list includes both over the counter and veterinary prescription canned dog food.
Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity in pets include:
- loss of appetite
- increased thirst
- increased urination
- excessive drooling
- weight loss.
- Vitamin D at toxic levels can cause kidney failure and death.
In most cases, pets recover completely after discontinuing the food. If your pet is displaying any of the above symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. VUCC veterinarians are on staff, 7 days a week in our Quincy, MA location.
